Before Marcel Tolkowsky published the mathematical proportions for the modern round brilliant cut in 1919, diamond cutters proportioned gems by eye to maximize fire under candle and gaslight.
1. Antique Diamond Cut Typologies
- Rose Cut (1500s–1800s): Flat bottom base with a domed crown featuring 3 to 24 triangular facets arranged in concentric circles, resembling an opening rosebud.
- Old Mine Cut (1700s–1800s): Squarish cushion outline with a high crown, small table, deep pavilion, and a prominent open culet facet.
- Old European Cut (1890s–1930s): Circular outline developed with steam-powered bruting machines, retaining a small table and high crown with chunky, broad fire flash facets.
